Title : Bedrock Geology of Ireland (1:100,000 scale)
Description : This data represents a seamless bedrock geological dataset encompassing Republic of Ireland and parts of Northern Ireland. The seamless geological dataset was created from the GSI Bedrock 1:100,000 scale digital geological map series. The dataset comprises 6 key shape files. 1)Bed100k.shp - A polygon shapefile that contains bedrock geological information on Stratigraphy, Igneous, Lithology and Diagenetic codes, their unit names and brief descriptions. 2) Index100k.shp- An overlay polygon index of 1:100,000 scale printed map sheets. 3) Struc100k.shp (Structural Linework) - A linework shapefile that contains structural geological linework codes and descriptions. 4) Strat100k.shp (Stratigraphic Linework) - A linework shapefile that contains stratigraphic geological line codes and descriptions. 5) Sect100k.shp (Cross section) - A linework shapefile indicating the locations of map sheet cross sections as per paper printed maps.
6) Mins100k.shp - A point shapefile contains mineral and quarry descriptions from Bedrock 1:100,000 map series. This is a subset of the MINLOCS database held by Minerals Section in the GSI.
The original printed map series and seamless dataset is based on the © Ordnance Survey of Ireland topological maps at 1/2 inch to one mile which were converted photographically to the metric 1:100,000 scale by the Geological Survey of Ireland Cartographic Unit. The topological base maps are not provided in the data set.

Data capture & compilation from GSI Field Surveys in 1845 to 2003 performed by Bedrock Section. Data was collected both internally by GSI and also from external data sources.
4.1.Filename : Detailed 6’’ field mapping

Base maps were supplied by OSI used to depict the geology. Geological maps at the 6’’ scale were created.
Geological data was collected from field mapping using topographic base maps at the 6’’ scale. The base maps were supplied by OSi. The OS 1:100,000-scale raster base originated from from OSi 1/2'' to 1 mile (1:126.720). They were scanned from photographic enlargements of the 1/2'' map scale and supplied in TIFF format with world files. GSI has since converted TIFF to GeoTIFF format.
Data capture and compilation was performed by Bedrock Section.
Data was collected both internally by GSI and also from external data sources.

4.2.Filename : 100k Bedrock Geology – non-seamless version

Compilation of 21 sheets to produce Bedrock maps with nationwide coverage. In 1994 the old production method in black and white was abandoned in favor of digitally produced colour maps. The Cartography Section introduced Arc Info GIS on UNIX in 1994 and commenced implementation of 1:100, 000 scale Bedrock digital mapping programme, (21 map sheets total coverage). The map series encompassed the bedrock geology of the Republic of Ireland with some geology overlapping of Northern Ireland. Each line type and symbol type to be used in the series was defined in the “red book” kept in bedrock Section.
Map sheet No.'s 1&2, 3&4 and 8&9 are single digital map sheets that also share part of the territory of Northern Ireland.
Bedrock AutoCAD layers were converted to .dxf format and imported into Arc Info 7.x. For each map sheet Arc Info aml, filtered out relevant Bedrock AutoCAD layers to generate new Arc Info coverages. Coverage creation was also registered to cookie cutter and 1:100, 000 monochrome raster base map used by Bedrock Section. A bedrock database file in ASCII format accompanied CAD file.
Each map sheet commenced in Arc Info generated new geological coverages representing Stratigraphy, Lithology, Igneous, Diagenetic, Dynamic, Thermal, Geological Linework and Point symbol data.
Bedrock Database was imported for each map sheet into Arc Info LU tables in ASCII format to permit population of geological codes in coverages and geological legend generation. New coverages were then created, coded and edited.
Each set of map sheet coverages was combined with OS 1:100,000 digital base to create geological maps with full marginalia.
All map sheets are available in paper copy accompanied by geological report.
In excess of 200 Arc Info coverages were created on completion of the map series in 2003. All Arc Info coverages were converted to shapefile format.
The map series is based on GSI field surveys conducted mainly at the six inches to a mile scale using OSI topographic base maps. The original surveys were started in 1845 and completed by 1890. Some map revisions were made in the first half of the 20 th century (Principally in the coalfields) but no systematic mapping was undertaken. Since 1967 detailed re-mapping at six inches to the mile scale continued into the 1980’s, by which more than 1/3 rd of the country had been remapped. This included contract mapping on behalf of GSI by PhD students in UCC and TCD. Some reconnaissance mapping was undertaken by GSI from 1974 onwards, primarily in the midlands Carboniferous, and field checking and drilling were undertaken to a limited extent during compilation from 1992 until completion in 2003.
Bedrock used AutoCad12 with their red book procedure on creation of geological layers.
CU used cartographics’ software ext. (A customized Arc Info module to facilitate map production process).
CU imported Bedrock data in DXF format and filtered layers in geological thematic GIS ‘coverages’.
Customized aml code was transparent and could be accessed and edited by CU.
Arc Scan ext. performed raster vector conversion preformed by heads up digitizing.
Marginalia was greated by aml scripts and generated by Cartography.

Nature of change/update to data
It was decided to join all the maps together into a seamless in Arc View. Each map sheet commenced in Arc Info generated new geological coverages representing Stratigraphy, Lithology, Igneous, Diagenetic, Dynamic, Thermal, and Geological Linework. All Arc Info coverages were converted to shapefile format.
It was decided to join all the maps together into a seamless in Arc View, this involved Bedrock, Cartography and Information Technology and Groundwater Section. As the compilation of the series progressed over than a decade, some of the sheet boundaries inevitably did not match due to more recent interpretations as well as minor problems with the rasters not quiet matching. The geological interpretation was “fudged” in order to ensure that boundaries and polygons crossed sheet boundaries where appropriate and joined up.
Cartography introduced Arc GIS 8.x in 2002 to undertake necessary seamless geoprocessing exercise on map sheet-by-sheet basis. The following layers were utilised from original Arc Info coverage map layers: Stratigraphy, Igneous, Lithology, Diagenetic and Geological Linework.
The geological linework was divided into two separate shape files: Structural units and Stratigraphic units.
The original Arc Info coverages had a limited number of fields and did not possess unique code identifier. A new coding system was introduced to establish unique code field called 'NEWCODE'. All Bedrock section's data from their main database at this time (Data flex) was converted to Microsoft Access. A procedure was then used to join and populate additional records as map sheets were added and merged.
Sheet joins and editing then commenced and quality control checks were introduced at interval and final stages. All relevant symbology was created and customized in Arc GIS. All relevant symbology was created and customized in Arc GIS.

Data in the form of six inch and one inch maps deposited by exploration companies along with borehole logs and locations were also used in the 1:100,000 compilations (data useful in the midlands Carboniferous).
The 1:100,000 series also used field surveys (mostly 6’’ to the mile) carried out in MSc/PhD mapping made available to GSI by Universities in Ireland and further a field.

Limitations of use: The geological dataset is under copyright of the Geological Survey of Ireland, and should only be used within the strict terms of the digital license agreement. This Map is purely representational and is designed for general information and strategic planning use only. Boundaries are interpolated on the basis of data available to the GSI at the time of compilation, from a variety of sources, and local details have been generalised to fit the map scale. The accuracy of data used or interpolations made, is neither stated nor implied. Evaluation of specific sites will normally require further and more detailed assessments, and will frequently require site investigations. The OS 1:100,000 scale base maps are not seamless and are under copyright by Ordnance Survey of Ireland.
Spatial Accuracy: Positional errors of up to 500m have been observed.
Thematic Accuracy: Correct names added to geological structures and geological units formations. A geologist has manually checked each digital sheet against its published paper copy twice. Small errors may exist.
Currency: The digital geometry and attributes are based on the paper-based national series, full colour Bedrock geology maps, with accompanying reports. The paper-based products were first produced in 1992. Contact the GSI for details on a particular sheet.
